ISKF CONTINUES TO GROW!
We are happy to announce that since Master Camp 2011, 8 countries have joined the ISKF.  They are:

Australia
Belarus
Haiti
New Zealand
Nicaragua
Switzerland
Ukraine
Zimbabwe

As you can see, they span every region across the globe.  We are very happy to welcome them to the ISKF family.  It is a tribute to all of our members that they join ISKF because some of them joined after having experienced our ISKF Master Camp and having met our many members.  ISKF is very proud that our Shotokan family always welcomes others regardless of their past affiliation or ethnicity.  We welcome all cultures because of the philosophy of our founder, Master Gichin Funakoshi which was to share Shotokan karate throughout the world.  This philosophy is shared by his student, our Chief Instructor, Master Teruyuki Okazaki.  Okazaki Shihan reminds us at every opportunity to study and live by the Dojo Kun and the Niju Kun.  He teaches us that this should be our main goal first and foremost.  If we do this, we are contributing to help bring peace to the world.
When Okazaki Shihan meets new country directors, this is the first principle he tells them.  And when we have our Board of Directors meeting, for our international, national and regional instructors, he again reminds every club instructor and director this important principle.  Master Okazaki never wants them to forget to pass these guidelines on to their students.  They are after all the future of the ISKF and if ISKF is to remain the high-caliber, traditional Shotokan organization as Master Funakoshi intended, it is imperative the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun be taught.   It is natural to forget this and focus on teaching the physical techniques, so everyone must make a conscience effort to remember the spiritual as well.  This is why ISKF has remained a traditional organization.   And why Okazaki Shihan feels it is important to end every class, event and even tournament with the Dojo Kun.  This is to be sure we remain a martial art organization, just as Master Funakoshi intended and never to become a sport organization.  This is what keeps the ISKF unique from other karate groups.  The training must begin and continue with building the character of each member.  Training is for a lifetime, and perfection of character must be the ultimate goal always.  If everyone practices this principle, then regardless of the culture or nationality, we are all the same and we are contributing to make the world a better place.

It will be held in the Philippines in November 2012. Please remember this agreement to host this event has just happened so they are still in the planning stages. We at ISKF Headquarters know they will do a very great job hosting our prestigious ISKF World Shoto Cup, just as they do with their Annual Okazaki Cup. And we also know as a family, they will have all of the ISKF support.

Resignation of Mr. Frank Woon-A-Tai

On January 24, 2011, the ISKF accepted the resignation of Mr. Frank Woon-A-Tai.  He has been a member of our ISKF family for a very long time. Fortunately, it is not often that a long-standing member chooses to leave our ISKF and it is never a pleasant occurrence.  We have always been an open, democratic organization with open communication.  This is what makes us different from other Martial Arts organizations, and this is what contributes to our constant growth.   However, occasionally with growth comes an occurrence that may be misunderstood or confusing.  As all of you are aware, the ISKF has grown rapidly since our independence from the JKA.  And as Okazaki Shihan always says, although the ISKF has no major problems there are always growing pains. Master Okazaki has always held steadfast is doing his best to preserve the values and tradition of his instructor – our founder, Master Gichin Funakoshi.  And although he is always open to new ideas to move forward, the ISKF will do so while maintaining the integrity and consistency of our organization for all its members.  We are happy to say, a great majority of our Canadian family have chosen to remain with the ISKF.  We understand this may be a difficult time for some, however, this is why Okazaki Shihan stresses to his members, if you understand and follow the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun, everything else in life will fall into place.

The following are the minutes from the meeting that was held at ISKF Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA with Mr. Frank Woon-A-Tai, the Shihankai and others as you will see in the minutes.

MIND AND BODY LIKE BULLET
The term Riki Shin Ichizu implies a "perfect convergence of mind and body." This term defines the philosophy with which Sensei Yutaka Yaguchi lives his life. Renowned for his abilities as a world-class karate master as well as his skill as an instructor, Sensei Yaguchi has avoided the spotlight... UNTIL NOW.

Newsflash
Shihan Masaru Miura will be teaching at our 2008 Master Camp along with Master’s Teruyuki Okazaki, Hirokazu Kanazawa and Yutaka Yaguchi.  Shihan Miura is 9th Dan and President of the Technical Committee of the SKI (Shotokan Karatedo International) European Federation and Chief Instructor in Italy.  Shihan Miura visited Shihan Okazaki in Philadelphia many years ago to help teach at one of Master Okazaki’s first clubs.  We are very excited about welcoming him back to our area.

We are very fortunate to have 4 of the highest-ranking Shotokan Masters in the world coming to our camp to teach.  This is an opportunity not to be missed by any serious Shotokan karate practitioner.  We suggest you get your reservations in early because if last year was an example, we will be drawing in a large crowd once again.

Master Teruyuki Okazaki recently visited Mexico Merida on March 13th – 17th, 2008. While there, Master Okazaki conducted seminars, Kyu and Dan Exams. Each seminar was attended by well over 80 students each time. His visit was so highly regarded that it was written up in several newspapers and many reporters conducted interviews and photographed him while he was there.

New Countries Join ISKF
March 2008, Uruguay joined the ISKF.  The chief instructor for the ISKF Uruguay is Mr. Edgardo Auza.  We are very pleased to have them as part of our ISKF international family.

Master Camp 2008 will be very exciting with the attendance of members from all of these new countries.  They have all agreed to participate in our Master Camp for the International Board of Directors Meeting and they have all reported to us how excited they and their members are to train with their new ISKF family under such wonderful instruction not to mention the opportunity to participate in the International Goodwill Tournament at Master Camp.  We are also very excited to meet and welcome them and show them how fortunate we all are to be part of such a great, traditional Shotokan organization under the guidance of Master Teruyuki Okazaki.  After all, he is one of only a handful of students still teaching who studied directly with Master Gichin Funakoshi.

The future of the ISKF is sure to prosper and grow with the sharing of ideas, cultures and techniques with our expanding ISKF family.  This is what Master Funakoshi wanted for the future of Shotokan karate, to share it with the world and this is the goal Master Okazaki has successfully spent his entire life working for.

Sharing Karate Spirit and Techniques
Since the ISKF is now an independent international organization, this allows us to expand our Master Camp to give our members even more information.  Last June, Mr. Hirokazu Kanazawa from the SKIF graciously accepted our invitation and contributed wonderful instruction along with Mr. Hideo Ochi (JKA Germany).  This was the second time Mr. Ochi was a guest instructor at Master Camp.  Mr. Kanazawa will be joining us once again at Master Camp, June 6th – 13th, 2008.

This camaraderie between the ISKF and SKIF is just one example of what democracy can achieve.  All of our members will benefit from all of the knowledge and inspiration available for Shotokan practitioners.  The ISKF is dedicated to continue to do its utmost to deliver the best instruction to all of its members throughout the world of Shotokan Karate-Do and to assist in the development of true martial artists.

New Countries Join ISKF
New countries have been contacting ISKF Headquarters to join and be part of our growing, international organization.  In July of 2007, Sri Lanka joined the ISKF and on October 24th – 31st, 2008 Mr. Gary Swain (6th Dan and ISKF Technical Committee member) will be visiting there to conduct a clinic and exams.

August 2007 marked the joining of our new group in South Africa.  Mr. San Pillay and many of his members as already scheduled to visit our ISKF Master Camp this June.

October 2007 the Philippines became full members of the ISKF bringing over 200 members with them.  Okazaki Shihan will be visiting the Philippines February 12th – 19th, 2008 to conduct seminars, exams and attend the first Okazaki Cup.

In January of 2008, Kuwait and Romania also joined our international family.  Our new friends from Kuwait will be visiting ISKF Headquarters in May as well as attending our ISKF Master Camp in June.

ISKF Countries/Regions Re-Organize
With the independence from the JKA, a few members opted to remain with the JKA.  However, the majority elected to remain ISKF and helped to re-organize so that the members in their countries/regions could continue to appreciate the many benefits of being an ISKF member.  This included Venezuela, now under the direction of Mr. Ronald Pedreanez.  Mr. Pedreanez has been working diligently to assure that the growth of the ISKF in Venezuela will continue.

In the US, our Southern, South Atlantic and Western regions have also been restructured by long- standing members who wished to remain ISKF.  In the Southern Region, Dr. J-D Swanson is maintaining that region along with the guidance of Mr. Leon Sill.  In the South Atlantic Region, Dr. Kim Koo, is continuing the direction there.  And in the Western Region, Mr. Chuck Coburn is the director.  Mr. Coburn will be hosting the 2008 ISKF/Western Special Spring Camp, which will include seminars and dan exams.  The guest instructor will be Master Yutaka Yaguchi and Sensei James Field.

ISKF International Championships
On February 17, 2008 the Philippines will hold the first Okazaki Cup hosted by Mr. David Lay and ISKF Philippines.

ISKF International Goodwill Championship will be held at the ISKF Master Camp, which is June 6th – 13th, 2008.  All Master Camp attendees, regardless of rank or affiliation are invited to participate as long as they attend the Master Camp.

The first ISKF World Shoto Cup will be held October 10th – 13th, 2008.  This world championship will be hosted by Mr. Woon-A-Tai and the ISKF/Canada.
